He must increase, I must decrease

The essence of being a Christian Leader is living a life of “God must Increase, I must decrease”. In a world of competition the afore mentioned statement would get us no where, not at least normally. As a Christian leader though, we as leaders have a purpose of pointing people to God and to do this we must get out of the way and decrease that God may increase through us.

Practically speaking, I think we model this best in servant leadership. A servant leader is another leader who is encompassed by vision, passion ad integrity; but add to this the leader becomes servant to their followers. I really can think of no better example than Jesus Christ. Jesus humbled himself by becoming the lowest of servants and washing his disciples feet. I think today’s equivalent would be that of a king humbling himself to bow at the feet of those he is king of and serving them unconditionally.

Kenosis is the idea of emptying ones self and this is what Jesus did. He emptied himself of his rights to be served and instead served in a way that pointed the people back to God. In this, I assume it is not just enough to serve, but to empty myself and serve in a way that I decrease before the people I lead and in this decrease it points to the increase of God in our midst. It really is all about God and all to often we get in the way of things competing for a position as leader or title as leader. The concept of Christian servant-leader is not of such. In fact it is the exact opposite where we live Christ in a servant way that points to the one with the only title that matters – Lord.
